Abstract

Iron sand deposits along the southern coast of Tasikmalaya Regency constitute a strategic mineral resource containing iron (Fe), titanium (Ti), and vanadium (V). This study aims to analyze the relationship between the texture and mineralogy of iron sand and the distribution of Fe, Ti, and V in beach placer deposits at Ciheras 1, Ciheras 2, and Cikalong blocks. The research methods include manual drilling, measurements of specific gravity and magnetic susceptibility, mineragraphic analysis, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), and Electron Probe Micro Analyzer (EPMA) to characterize mineral phases and elemental distribution at the microscale. The results indicate that the iron sand is predominantly composed of magnetite, ilmenite, hematite, and titanomagnetite, exhibiting massive, exsolution, and myrmekitic textures. The deposit thickness ranges from 1 to 4 meters with an estimated inferred resource of approximately ±1.26 million tons. Geochemical analysis reveals a very strong positive correlation between Fe and V (r = 0.99), indicating a close association of vanadium with Fe–Ti oxide phases, particularly magnetite and ilmenite. In contrast, the correlation between Ti and V is positive but relatively weak, suggesting that part of Ti is not associated with V. Magnetic concentration processes are capable of increasing V grades by 3.5–4 times. This study confirms that the exsolution texture and mineralogy of iron sand play a critical role in controlling the distribution of Fe, Ti, and V and provides a scientific basis for further exploration and sustainable management of iron sand resources.
