Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of alteration minerals and manganese ore-bearing minerals in the Paludda Area, Barru Regency, South Sulawesi. Field data collection was conducted through the determination of sampling points, outcrop observations, lithological descriptions, and sampling of manganese deposits and altered rocks. Laboratory analyses included petrography, mineragraphy, and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to determine the assemblage of alteration minerals, manganese ore-bearing minerals, and the variations in their associated minerals. The results show that alteration in basaltic rocks is dominated by the formation of kalsit and klorit minerals, indicating a low- to medium-temperature alteration zone. The manganese ore minerals identified include rhodokrosit, manganit, pirolusit, manganese iron oxide, and alabandit. The textures observed include intergrowth and replacement, which indicate a sequence of mineral formation from an early stage of carbonatization to a later stage of oxidation processes. Manganese deposits occur in two main types, namely cavity-filling deposits within carbonate rocks and residual deposits with sizes ranging from 10–100 m. Mineralogical and textural variations indicate that the mineralization process was influenced by hydrothermal fluid conditions and an oxidation environment that evolved over time. These findings provide an overview of the evolution of manganese mineralization and its economic potential in the study area.
